Soft pastels are an incredible medium. Pure pigment, dating back to the early painters. Archival. Same pigment as oil paints. Beautiful crystals. Layering gives depth, luminosity and creates new color/hues. I rarely blend and one layer builds upon the next. The edges of the pastel sticks and various brands and shape, provide nuance and opportunity to explore a myriad of varying techniques. One can underpaint with same or different medium, and then add multiple pastel layers. I paint on sanded paper which allows the medium a place or foundation, to hold it's ground. Paint thin to thick, which is hard to remember because of the amazing beauty of the color and smoothness of application. If I had to choose one word for soft pastels....Dreamy; but that's almost as hard as choosing one color as a favourite, which is relatively-impossible; like choosing a favourite star in the sky. Just choose the Sky!
